VC Principal @ TDK Ventures in San Jose, CA

TDK seeks an experienced Senior Executive Leader to join, and be the first Principal, of TDK Ventures, its Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) initiative. This position is responsible for the Corporate Venture Business Development (CVBD) function, building deal pipeline and develop a sound investment portfolio in line TDK Ventures’ Investment Thesis. Works with CVC investment team to deliver an ’end-to-end investing’ model, with the goal of investing globally in high-potential start-ups that will leverage fundamental material science to unlock meaningful megatrends, and secure meaningful learnings back to the organization.

  • Research, develop, and help articulate views on a corporate technology investment strategy in close alignment with strategies and requirements of the various TDK business groups, ultimately building compelling investment theses for TDK Ventures
  • Define and lead due diligence process priorities on prospective startups, driving material science related technology analysis, product value proposition analysis, business model and financial valuation
  • Help drive rigorous strategic and valuation analyses to support investment decision-making
  • Proactively expand network in global venture and start-up ecosystem, building high-quality relationships to drive deal flow, and facilitate due diligence of potential investments with high caliber co-investing partners relevant to each investment
  • Analyze operational forecasts and business strategies of active investments and suggest actions when necessary
  • Provide ongoing operational support for TDK Ventures Portfolio Companies
  • Facilitate business partnering arrangements for TDK Ventures Portfolio Companies

 

Job Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in the Sciences, Engineering, Materials, Mechanical or Electrical; PhD a plus
  • 5+ years venture investment experience at Senior Associate or Principal level
  • Experience working with startup ecosystems as well as business interactions with large corporate entities
  • Experience in New Product/Business Development & Strategy
  • Technology background and start-up experience preferred; management consulting experience a plus
  • An intellectual curiosity and understanding of diverse technologies with an ability to recognize and grasp critical material science related technology capabilities and potentials
  • Broad ability to perform valuation analysis, to strategic hypothesis brainstorming, to product roadmap evaluation, to meeting and working with senior executives
  • Proficiency in modeling company financials and performing valuation analysis
  • Proficiency in deal structuring and negotiation
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast paced environment with multiple teams and functions and across multiple projects
  • Ability to work with different cultures across the world
  • Superior work ethic, strong desire to learn, and uncompromising attention to detail
  • Self-starter comfortable wearing a range of hats; Ability to contribute at a high level in less-defined roles
  • Excellent analytical, research, and organizational skills
