The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (“MassCEC”) seeks a proactive, self-starter to join the venture investments (“Investments”) and grant/stakeholder activation program (“Programs”) teams. The Investment and Innovation Analyst will work with the Investments and Programs teams to accelerate the advancement of technology and economic development in the Massachusetts clean energy industry, and help to meet the Commonwealth’s climate goals. On a day-to-day basis, the Analyst will report to the Investment Associate and to one or more Project Managers in the Program team, with 50% of the Analyst’s time devoted to each of Investments and Program work.
The Analyst will work alongside the Investments team to source, evaluate, and manage equity and venture debt investments in the most promising clean energy companies in Massachusetts. The Analyst will also assist with operation of grant programs supporting clean energy technologies and companies, as well as stakeholder activation efforts conducted by the Program team.
MassCEC seeks a highly independent candidate with excellent time management and prioritization skills, and a desire to take on and accomplish a wide range of tasks. Job Duties:
The Analyst will gain valuable experience through supporting a broad range of program- and investment-related activities.
1) New Investments and Transaction Support: Help the Investments team identify promising clean energy companies and execute new investments to grow our portfolio.
a. Help the team track, analyze and evaluate new clean energy investments by conducting due diligence. This includes business plan evaluation, and general, financial, and technical due diligence;
b. Assist in preparation of presentations and recommendations for investments to senior management, the Investments Committee, and the Board of Directors;
c. Support in coordinating and processing deal/transaction documentation;
2) Grant Administration and Program Support: Support the Program team Project Managers and the Senior Program Director in day-to-day operations of existing and new programming.
a. Manage grant application intake, review, and contracting processes for a range of MassCEC grant programs;
b. Support creation and administration of requests for proposals, application templates, program webpages, and other program-related documents and deliverables;
c. Recruit external expert reviewers as needed;
d. Monitor program inboxes and provide prompt and accurate responses to stakeholder questions and outreach;
e. Serve as primary contact for existing grantees and stakeholders in ongoing projects, including coordinating in-person or phone meetings as needed;
f. Oversee invoicing and contract amendment processes on an as-needed basis;
g. Take ownership of problem-solving and process-untangling for stakeholders in existing programs and grant projects.
3) Grant and Investments Portfolio Support: Work closely with members of the Investments and Program teams as we engage with and provide support to companies that we’ve already invested in and/or awarded a grant to.
a. Assist senior Investments and Programs staff with targeted initiatives to support the success of portfolio companies and grantees;
b. Lead the semi-annual Request for Information (RFI) process with existing MassCEC investment portfolio companies;
c. Continuously update and maintain summary performance metrics on grantees and portfolio companies;
d. Maintain relevant program and investment tracking databases for the team;
e. Lead deal/transaction processing for follow-on investments.
4) Other Support Duties: Play a key role in making the Programs and Investments teams operate efficiently and coordinating our work with other teams at MassCEC.
a. Organize events such as workshops for external stakeholders, the annual CEO & Investor Summit for CEOs of MassCEC portfolio companies and clean energy investors, and others;
b. Respond to data and information requests from within the organization (legal, finance, CEO, other divisions);
c. Play a role representing MassCEC at meetings, conferences, and working sessions;
d. Lead the internal review process for investments through MassCEC’s award management software platform (Fluxx);
e. Assist with administrative duties such as meeting notes, preparing agendas, preparing documents for CEO signature, scheduling meetings, and other tasks as directed by other investments staff;
f. Provide guidance and training to MassCEC Fellows as needed and directed by senior staff; and
g. Assist in managing the Investments Committee preparation process, including preparing and finalizing electronic and hard copies of materials, assisting with preparation scheduling, and other Investments Committee and Board-related Investments tasks.
Position Qualifications:
Education:
- Minimum undergraduate university degree; and
- Background in relevant fields such as business, public policy, finance, sustainability, economics, and/or environmental studies/science, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- This an entry level role; 0-2 years of work experience;
- Internship, co-op, or entry-level experience in energy, grant management, stakeholder management, finance, or investments, a plus.

- Interest in clean energy technology and a demonstrated aptitude to understand complex and new products, systems, innovations, and business concepts, as well as market opportunities and challenges.
