Executive VC Director @ Pfizer in Boston, MA

This Executive Director Pfizer Ventures (PV) role is in Worldwide Business Development/CBO. As a member of Pfizer Ventures, this person will source, diligence, negotiate, and manage investments in early stage private biotechnology companies aligned with Pfizer’s scientific and business strategies, with the goal of providing strategic and financial benefit to Pfizer. Processing, managing, and tracking investment analytics is also a key component of this role and this extends beyond the venture portfolio to other corporate business transactions that involve equity purchases. To be successful the candidate will need to leverage both internal and external networks of diverse groups, with the goal of creating/supporting strong companies to partner with Pfizer and provide financial return.

Role Responsibilities

  • Participate as an equal member of the Pfizer Venture team that is composed of colleagues in ESI/WRDM and WWBD.
  • Identify PV investment opportunities in private companies with breakthrough science/technology and strong leadership teams relevant to Pfizer’s businesses
  • Execute transactions through diligence, financial analysis, negotiation, and legal documentation review in conjunction with internal and external attorneys.
  • Manage deal governance processes ensuring compliance with corporate and Pfizer Ventures procedures.
  • Manage and track PV and corporate equity investments over time, providing data for financial reporting, reports and presentations.
  • Manage PV investments through board participation, and management recruitment and drive to successful financial exits (IPO/M&A).
  • Build diverse collaborative relationships across Pfizer to generate alignment around investments and facilitate collaboration between portfolio companies and Pfizer.
  • Cultivate diverse relationships external to Pfizer within the Biotech ecosystem.
  • Knowledgably represent Pfizer in discussions external audiences and routinely present and represent Pfizer Ventures at external meeting/conferences and forums.

Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

Basic Qualifications

  • Professional degree required – PhD, MD, JD, MBA
  • Significant understanding of the biopharmaceutical model with at least five to ten years biopharmaceutical company work experience.
  • At least three years experience in venture capital investing and/or equity capital markets.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate with Scientific and business leaders inside and outside the organization
  • Demonstrated the ability to operate within team of peers across corporate functions – thrives in a team environment. Ability to effectively communicate with C-Suite level leaders.
  • Skilled in use of Microsoft based business software systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experienced in financial management and analysis
  • Strong communication skills demonstrated in both business/scientific and casual environments
  • Influencing skills to influence without line management
  • Experience in working closely with, advising and presenting to senior leaders on collaborations, business development or strategy
  • Strong negotiation capabilities: ability to persuade/ influence and effectively gain agreement/consensus

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to travel independently.
  • Ability to review and understand complex scientific, drug development and business proposals.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and complex data analysis.
  • Ability to review and understand complex legal documents.

Non-standard Work Schedule, Travel Or Environment Requirements

  • Ability to travel globally 25% or more of the time – the companies we invest in are primarily US based – focused in the Boston and San Francisco areas. X-US investments tend to be in UK or in Western Europe.
  • Non-traditional work hours required on an as needed basis –early mornings, nights, weekends and during vacation time.

Other Information

  • A Remote employee will be required to be in NYHQ several days a month.

  • This role has financial responsibility, shared with all Pfizer Ventures Team members, to manage within investment guidelines. Pfizer Ventures has over $1.3B AUM and deploys :$100M annually and consistently provides returns to Pfizer and has maintained a return of :25% for the past 8 years.

  • NO Direct reports
