Senior Manager of Business Development @ Akebia in Cambridge, MA

Within the Business Operations department (LinkedIn, Crunchbase) , this team member will contribute to the full scope of business development initiatives in a fast-paced environment, reporting to the Senior Director of Business Development. This position is primarily responsible for supporting such activities as screening products, companies, and therapeutic areas, coordinating due diligence of licensing opportunities, product/market financial modeling, developing and coordinating market research, preparing presentations, negotiation support, contract review, and internal cross functional communication to support in-licensing and/or M&A activities as well as partnering of internal programs.

Essential Functions and Duties

Responsibility for:

• Driving due diligence processes with internal / external stakeholders and evaluation for potential opportunities with appropriate prioritization and utilization of resources throughout process

• Directing and performing financial analyses to support opportunity assessment and deal structuring, including valuation, pro forma forecasting, operational analyses and optimization of deal terms

• Key contributions to term sheet and contract negotiations and relevant interactions both internally and externally to optimize outcomes

• Working closely with internal team members (across all functional areas) and relevant counterparts externally to fully support potential deals

• Key contributor to strategic assessments of indications

• Supporting long-range planning, leveraging focus on BD activities outlined above coupled with portfolio analyses

• Prepare, maintain and deliver presentations to senior management (including financial/deal analyses, corporate or program presentations, opportunity assessments, etc.)

• Act as exemplary representative for Akebia at scientific / BD conferences and other meetings

Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required; science or business-related graduate degree(s) preferred

• 7+ years of relevant pharma or biotech experience, with at least 3 years in business development; investment banking, consulting, or venture capital experience preferred

• Experience in opportunity strategic evaluations, due diligence, and negotiations of partnership / M&A agreements required

• A broad business understanding (particularly of the pharmaceutical/biotech industry) and the ability to coordinate cross-functionally is essential.

• Leadership / ownership mentality

• Strong analytical skills (strategic analyses, market research, modeling, etc.) A thorough understanding of financial evaluation techniques (especially forecasting, pro-forma product P&L modeling, cost analysis and probability adjusted NPV’s) is important.

• Excellent presentation and writing skills that elevate standard for the company

• Strong project management and project leadership skills, as well as the ability to execute plans/projects on aggressive timetables, are essential.

• Ability to thrive in a team environment with collaborative approach while taking responsibility for key initiatives

• Experience with qualitative and quantitative market research techniques is preferred.
