Principal & Investment Manager VC Job @ Underscore VC

Underscore VC (Linkedin, Twitter, Crunchbase) is a Boston-based firm that backs transformative entrepreneurs from idea to scale with an aligned community. In order to surround our founders with the experience, skills, and knowledge they can leverage to succeed, we’ve brought together a community of leading entrepreneurs, we call “Cores” to partner with us in investing our $85M first fund. These curated groups of peers have proven how to build enduring, impactful businesses and have joined together with a personal desire to give back and support the next generation of up and coming entrepreneurs.

The Role:

We’re looking for nothing short of a rockstar that wants to become one of the best venture capitalists in the world and build an iconic firm in the process. The role is for someone who has already spent several years in the industry after completing a masters degree (either as an associate, senior associate, or principal) and is intent on finding a partner track role (across several funds) at a growing firm.

As a full-fledged member of the investment team, the individual will help broadly across the firm’s strategy, process, and operations. We’re a small team (2 Partners, 1 Principal, 1 Community Manager), so the responsibilities of the role are broad. That said, the role will have a primary focus on sourcing interesting investment opportunities, working with the team to diligence and select the right ones, and participating in the building of portfolio companies to exit. Beyond supporting the investment process, the role will also be responsible for contributing to fund strategy and operations.

What we expect:

One of the largest values the role will bring to Underscore VC is sourcing and selecting new investments while learning + apprenticing on the investing, building, and exiting of investments across the portfolio. Here’s how you might jump in to help us find, invest in, and support portfolio companies, with (representative) responsibilities that include:

  • Investment Sourcing:
    • Proactively finding and meeting interesting companies and exceptional teams
    • Building new investment theses by analyzing and assessing new markets
    • Conducting market research through interviews, conferences, and other sources
    • Creating content, events, and more to build the firm’s brand in spaces of interest
    • Attending industry events, demo days, and representing Underscore in the world as we seek out more entrepreneurs in new places.
  • Investment Selection & Diligence:
    • Vet investment opportunities
    • Conduct research, customer calls, expert interviews, investor conversations, etc.
    • Synthesize findings and prepare investment recommendation documents summarizing the investment thesis and due diligence on investment opportunities
  • Portfolio Company Support:
    • Participating in calls/meetings with management teams, financial reviews and analyses, and board package reviews
    • Support companies with strategy, hiring, business development, and planning for future financing
    • Manage performance analytics and reporting across the portfolio
  • Firm Operations Support:
    • Ensure pipeline management and communications efficiency across the team

We welcome the perspective and vision of someone who probably looks nothing like anyone currently in our business and looking to hire the person, more than the resume. With that in mind, it may help to have:

  • A few years of related experience (e.g. VC/PE, entrepreneurship, etc.)
  • A graduate degree or MBA, but certainly not necessary
  • Previous experience founding or running a venture-backed company and/or deep passion for investing in the teams behind market defining technology businesses
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a creative problem-solving style, and exceptional work ethic
  • An eye for identifying promising, high‐growth businesses & transformative entrepreneurs
  • A self-starter mentality, that is able to initiate work or projects & work independently
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
  • The attitude that entrepreneurship at the intersection of great teams, technology, and large markets can move mountains
