Blue {Seed} Collective is a people-first, early stage venture investment firm located in New York City. Our investment thesis is simple: we believe phenomenal people build phenomenal businesses. This means our mission is to identify, invest in, and develop exceptional entrepreneurs across industry and geography. We invest most heavily in the US, in tech businesses, and in founders who have premium professional backgrounds (most often alumni of McKinsey, Bain, BCG, and Goldman).
We are a ‘start-up’ VC with the energy, aspiration, and funding to build a different type of investment platform. We are currently deploying our first Fund and have built an initial portfolio of 20+ exciting, diverse companies. We are convinced of the value of diversity of perspective in our portfolio, our LP base, and our team and want to build a world-class and inclusive institution.
Today we are two co-Founder Partners in search of a distinctively talented individual to join as the first team member.
Role Overview:
The Venture Associate will lead and support activities across the full spectrum of Blue {Seed} Collective operations, from sourcing to diligence to portfolio support to investor engagement and brand building. You will work side-by-side with Blue Collective’s Partners and receive active coaching and mentorship. You will play an integral role in helping us create Blue Collective’s long-term strategy and build a premier investment business. We anticipate this role to be an accelerated track to Partner. As such, we are looking for someone not afraid to put everything on the line and help us build something special and long-lasting. This is a role that promises long hours and little pay (at least in the near-term) in return for:
- World-class coaching;
- The experience of building a business (and businesses);
- Exposure across wide-ranging industries, technologies, and people that is rarely matched;
- A real career path in venture capital; and
- The prospects of fabulous riches in the future!
Responsibilities:
- Develop and cultivate long-lasting relationships with entrepreneurs and companies that fit our investment scope
- Lead industry research into sectors and businesses that fit our investment scope
- Drive diligence activities (e.g., founder interviews, market and competitive analysis, customer interviews, etc.) and support investment decision-making
- Support portfolio entrepreneurs with the best of Blue Collective (e.g., problem-solving, introductions, hiring support, hands-on support, analysis, etc.)
- Support brand-building activities (including content creation and events)
- Drive special projects related to Blue Collective’s longer-term growth and strategy
- Support fundraising activities for future Blue Collective Funds
- Help craft the overall strategy and direction for the Firm
Ideal Profile:
- A leader, entrepreneur, and ‘self-starter’ – this is a ‘start-up’ and demands the requisite level of dedication and sacrifice
- Energized by new ideas – a generalist at heart who can also go deep and become an expert in any topic in less than a day
- Energized by new people – loves meeting new people and developing long-lasting, trust-based relationships
- Operator mindset – knows how businesses get big and how they make money
- Razor-sharp analytical skills – comfortable and adept with fact-gathering, analysis, and insight generation
- Killer communication skills – able to influence people and express ideas clearly and succinctly
- Values-driven – knows what it means to operate as a principled professional
- Ideally 2+ years as Analyst or Associate at top management consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG)
- BA degree required; MBA and/or grad degree valued, but not required (see above for what’s really important)
- PE / VC experience discouraged ;-)
Salary:
- Annual salary starting at $70K USD with annual performance bonus
- Associate will also receive equity at the start (i.e., a portion of GP “carry”)
