About Outset Capital

  • Outset Capital, based in SF, invests ~$300K checks at the earliest possible stage, making 10-15 investments per year. We’re backed by leaders including Adam D’Angelo (Quora), Drew Houston (Dropbox), and Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn).
  • Our General Partners are Ali Rohde, Josh Albrecht, and Kanjun Qiu. Kanjun and Josh also founded Imbue, a unicorn coding agent startup, so we are both founders and investors. We aim to be the most helpful investor per dollar, particularly helping founders hire their founding engineering teams.
  • We’ve backed 40 companies across Fund I and now Fund II, including many that have gone on to raise Series As, Bs, and Cs. Portfolio companies include Browserbase, Physical Intelligence, Hedra, Medra, MatX, Kindred, Harper Insure, and DatologyAI.
  • We’re hiring someone to help deploy Fund II over the next two years.

The Role

  • We’re looking for someone to join Ali as a second full-time investor (Kanjun and Josh are part-time, as they are full-time founders). In addition to Ali, we have one full-time Ops team member, Mae.
  • This role is perfect for someone who is optimizing for real investing experience, independence, and learning. We’re looking for someone who lives outside of the Bay Area, who is highly independent, who is obsessed with early-stage startups, and wants to spend all day speaking to founders.
  • This is a highly independent role. We’ll sync regularly to share leads and discuss interesting companies. But the day-to-day is you doing your thing to get in touch with founders and learn about their vision.

What You’ll Do

  • Own investment decisions end-to-end through sourcing, founder calls, and diligence
  • Source exceptional founders through proactive outreach and our existing network, and eventually build your own sourcing networks
  • Work to support our portfolio founders as they continue to grow and scale
  • Optional: Help shape and refine Outset’s internal systems, processes, and investment workflows
  • Optional: Contribute to AI tool development, writing projects, and hiring fairs to help Outset continue to learn and improve

  • Real investing experience: You’ll make 10+ investments per year, building your own track record (versus 1-3 at larger firms). You’ll likely make an investment in your first month on the job.

Why This Is Not an Awesome Role

  • Outset is a young firm with tons to figure out, especially around supporting multiple investors. If you want established processes, this isn’t for you
  • Kanjun and Josh are amazing but part-time, so you’ll get to know them in small bits over time
  • We write small checks and try to back a company a month, so if you want to spend three months going deep on one area, this is not the right fit

Compensation

Outset is a small fund, so this is a lower cash, higher equity position. Compensation for this position is $60K-110K, plus carry.
