HOW YOU’LL HELP US KEEP CLIMBING (OVERVIEW & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES)

Delta Air Lines is continually looking to embrace new technologies and enhance the customer experience, and with that in mind we are looking for current students who are interested in working with a leading innovation team in the airline industry. You will need to embrace challenges, devour knowledge, and love working on meaningful problems. Innovation isn’t just a concept; it’s about continually improving the customer experience from pre-booking a flight all the way through to a customer’s final destination.  The interns will receive flight benefits during the assignment.

Ventures Strategy: Support operations within the Ventures team and supporting teammates regarding sourcing companies and determining strategic fit.

The Tech Scouting & Ventures team plays a key role in developing and executing corporate innovation initiatives that contribute to Delta Air Lines’ market leadership and growth. The team invests in innovative, early to growth stage, entrepreneurial companies to accelerate Delta’s strategic advantage and learning through differentiation, cost reduction, and new revenue channels. Team members work with officers and business leaders across the company to execute equity investments, both domestically and internationally, and to foster the success of Delta’s portfolio companies by leveraging the unique resources and insights across Delta.

Intern responsibilities include:

  • Develop thesis around strategic areas and conduct market and industry analysis
  • Identify emerging themes in technology and map the strategic needs of Delta to relevant tech and startups
  • Meets with and qualifies startups, and maintains strong relations with the venture and entrepreneurial communities
  • Monitor the venture landscape, manage, and report on portfolio companies
  • Conducts due diligence including financial modeling, strategic and technical evaluation of startup capabilities
  • Spend time getting out in Delta’s operation to better understand the needs of Delta’s people, and Delta’s customers, and leverage those insights to translate how the technical maps to the strategic

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Graduate student with experience and/or interest in business/design/technology and research related topics
  • Demonstrate general understanding or interest in emerging technologies and trends in areas such as (but not limited to): Artificial Intelligence; Virtual/Mixed/Augmented Reality technologies; Autonomous technologies, IoT/Wearable technologies, Robotics
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively when appropriate
  • Curiosity and willingness to explore topics beyond the surface (e.g., beyond desk research)
  • Good communication skills and creative thinking with excellent storytelling capabilities, providing appropriate business, design, customer, and cultural context
  • Flexibility and organizational skills to multi-task and re-prioritize multiple projects and stakeholder needs
  • Attention to detail and ability to deliver within tight deadlines
  • Ability to understand key features of a topic without having the benefit of exhaustive knowledge or detail
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations, with minimal direct guidance
  • Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data. 
  • Embraces diverse people, thinking, and styles. 
  • Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency. 
  • Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States.

WHAT WILL GIVE YOU A COMPETITIVE EDGE (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Experience in quantitative/qualitative research design and methodologies
  • Experience developing full-stack software leveraging object-oriented programming methods including (but not limited to) Python, C++, JAVA, etc.
  • Experience in hardware and IoT design/development and utilizing sensors, Raspberry Pi, Arduino boards, or similar
  • Exhibits a deep understanding of management tools and frameworks, such as Business Model Canvas, Porter’s 5-Forces, etc.
  • Deal screening: Source and support evaluation of incoming deals for strategic fit and investment
