Job Description: Controller (Salary Range $150k-$190k)
Slow Ventures is an early-stage focused Venture Capital firm with team members out of San Francisco, Boston, and New York (though this role can be remote). We are generalists and invest in early-stage teams and ideas ranging from SaaS to Consumer Brands to Fintech, and Crypto. About the Job
We are looking for a Controller to own the tactical day-to-day responsibilities surrounding our finance, accounting, and operational efforts. Reporting to the CFO, this person will be responsible for the accounting of all existing active funds and the management company as well as other key functions within the firm including HR functions and providing a supporting role with the investment team on the execution of portfolio company transactions. The Controller will work closely with the CFO in continuing to scale the finance function by implementing efficient processes. This role will immediately be a contributor to the overall success of the firm.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Detail review of the fund administrators work, including the fund’s financial statements, cash reconciliations, investments, capital calls, distributions, and expense payments
- Assist with the management company quarterly close, including executing budget to actuals tracking, ongoing expense tracking, vendor payments and calculating quarterly GP distributions
- Aid CFO in maintaining all aspects of HR (employment policies, procedures, payroll, expense policy and reimbursement, and benefits programs)
- Assist CFO in managing the external tax and audit teams to ensure timely tax return filings, K-1 issuance, and year-end audit issuance
- Work closely with CFO on cash management for funds and management company
- Ensure all accounting functions are consistent with the partnership agreements and elevate issues to internal team as necessary
- Field and respond to investor inquiries alongside CFO and GPs
- Aid treasury control function including the initial set-up of wire transfers, capital call execution, and distribution execution with fund administrator
- Lead the tactical interface with portfolio companies to gather performance data and facilitate transactions such as IPOs, recapitalizations, mergers & acquisitions
- Assist CFO with tax and liquidity planning for both the GP and LP entities
- Track portfolio company KPIs, financial reporting, and fund performance metrics
- Key driver of all year-end valuation procedures with the support of CFO and investment team
Qualifications
- 6-8+ years’ experience in venture capital finance
- Excellent financing reporting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Experience working with fund admin, tax, and audit service providers
- Willingness to personally handle all finance and operational-related projects, deliverables, and responsibilities
- Ability to oversee many (~12) different venture funds totaling nearly $1B in capital and hundreds of individual live investments
- Desire to work in a growing (but small), entrepreneurial environment
- Comfortable working remotely (if relevant)
