The incoming Investment Analyst will be a part of the Ventures team at Sorenson Capital, which is comprised of 3 Partners, 2 Principals, 1 Vice President, and 1 Associate. The Ventures team is laser-focused on backing companies from inception up to Series A (or up to $5M ARR).

About the Analyst Position

The Investment Analyst will play a pivotal role in the firm’s investment and portfolio management operations. While this is a 2-year opportunity, there is the potential to extend the role beyond 2 years, and the firm has helped place Analysts at portfolio companies or other investment firms.

Role & Responsibilities

The Analyst’s core responsibility is to support the Ventures investment team across sourcing and triaging deals, conducting investment diligence, managing portfolio projects and reporting, planning events and conferences, and engaging with LPs.

Sourcing

  • New Deal Sourcing: Surface quality startups in our target sectors through secondary research, attend conferences and events, and leverage deal sourcing tools to identify prospective investments
  • Industry Networking: Develop relationships with incubators, accelerators, and other VC firms as a part of the firm’s VC prospecting motion
  • Initial Outreach and Screening: Hold first meetings with highly technical entrepreneurs to evaluate fit for the Ventures fund. Also triaging inbound deal opportunities.
  • CRM Management: Build out automated screens and searches to ensure a healthy outbound sourcing motion

Investment Diligence

  • Market/Competitive Analyses: Conduct comprehensive market research to understand relevant markets, determine market sizes, develop views on potential for new market entrants, and identify differentiation from existing market players
  • Product Evaluation: Attend product demos to evaluate product complexity, differentiation from other solutions, likelihood of new market entrants, and opportunity to displace incumbents
  • Financial Analysis: Summarize financial data and build forward financial models. Specific workflows include analyzing historic financial statements, creating SaaS metrics dashboards, and building forward feasibility analyses to determine the likelihood of meeting future budgets
    • Note: This requires a fundamental understanding of software KPIs (ARR bridges, retention, sales efficiency, burn analyses, etc.) and how to model Cap Tables

Portfolio Support / Other

  • Portfolio Reporting: Handle quarterly portfolio reporting, including board meeting reviews, quarterly data uploads, and performance reporting for internal and external stakeholders, including Limited Partners
  • Portfolio Projects: Manage sporadic portfolio company requests, including fundraising support, market pricing reviews, hiring support, customer introductions, exit process planning, etc. This provides direct exposure to management teams.
  • Special Projects: Examples of past projects include thesis presentations for our limited partners, annual general meeting materials, deliverables for quarterly offsites, fundraising decks, etc.
