Job Description

Become a member of BlueScope’s venture capital team (BlueScopeX), reporting directly to the head of venture operations.

This role is based in our Melbourne CBD office, engaging internally and externally across a global footprint.

The role actively participates and invests in the start-up ecosystem. Focussing in two main areas, decarbonisation of steel, and the built environment, BlueScopeX is critical to shaping the company’s strategic direction and delivering financial returns.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analysis of various start-up technologies to identify those companies we believe will shape the future of the industry. Make recommendations on investment decisions and contribute to our internal knowledge base.
  • Engagement across the global venture ecosystem, with start-up companies, other VC’s, universities, and organisations alike. This provides an opportunity to travel both domestically and international.
  • Collaboration with a variety of stakeholders across the organisation (including senior executives), where the ability to synthesise information and communicate in a structured manner is critical.
  • An engaged and collaborative team member that contributes to ideas to continuously improve the quality of venture function

Qualifications

This is a unique position whereby you will need the capacity to research and understand technical processes, as well as key commercial drivers, market entry/growth strategies and form investment theses and recommendations. Key to the success of this role is the ability to structure and communicate information with various levels of internal and external stakeholders.

To achieve this, we believe the ideal candidate:

  • Comes from a technical background, tertiary qualified in a field of Engineering, Science, Finance, or prior work experience in related fields (such as engineering or management consulting, venture capital, corporate or academia)
  • Can demonstrate logical reasoning and commercial acumen
  • Helpful but not essential if you bring an understanding of the steel industry or industrial / manufacturing companies and processes
