Primary Venture Partners is looking for a Built World and Future of Work/Productivity/SMB Tech Sr. Associate to join its Investment team, reporting to General Partner Jason Shuman.

The Sr. Associate at Primary will be responsible for working closely with the Partner to create, execute on and lead a specialization strategy seeking top 5% returns. The initial focus will be on the Built World and Future of Work/Productivity/SMB Tech. The Senior Associate is expected to become an investing expert in the sector, helping figure out which areas of the ecosystem we want to focus on and will play a key role in leading investments.
The ideal candidate is ready to hustle, resourceful, deeply analytical, well-networked and not afraid to cold email or hunt down introductions to key experts, founders and investors. This person should have a strong desire to specialize, becoming an expert in the areas of focus.

About this role

    • Consistently surface proprietary insights and new prospects worthy of focused diligence in sector of focus
    • Develop independent relationships with founders and key talent outside of the Primary portfolio
    • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders and early stage venture firms focused on Built World and Future of Work/Productivity/SMB Tech sector who can form our advisory network and whom we can co-invest with
    • Connect effectively with founders in the first meeting, communicating Primary value to ensure we are at the table if we want to be. Ask clear questions and drive effective dialogue with prospect companies
    • Independently run diligence processes with assistance from the Partner, effectively prioritizing diligence areas and pitching interesting deals to the rest of the team to evaluate
    • Perform high-level evaluation of founding team based on backchannel referencing and secondary sources
    • Create industry breakdowns and investment memos that will be presented to the team
    • Create preliminary target lists of Series A investors and builds relationships with key players at high value downstream capital providers
    • Execute on cap table modeling Communicate clearly with Primary resources and portfolio company management to ensure expectations are aligned
    • Support Partners with ongoing LP reporting
    • Work with the Partner and Operator-in-residence to incubate 1-2 companies per year

About you

    • Must be available to work full-time in NYC
    • Self-starter: you have an entrepreneur’s intrinsic motivation and are capable of independently running with business ideas with substantial ambiguity. You are resourceful, passionate about ownership and willing to hustle to win deals
    • Network-builder: you’re comfortable developing relationships with industry leaders from the ground up and have a deep knowledge of technology investing as well as a strong understanding of the VC ecosystem
    • Entrepreneurial: you are eager to engage in the venture and startup ecosystem and can quickly build credibility with founders
    • Storyteller: you’re able to learn rapidly, develop a strong point of view, and communicate compelling narratives
    • Data-driven: you have a strong analytical tool kit from strategy consulting, investment banking or a commercial or financial role in tech. You’re comfortable with financial models and concepts and can quickly assess the feasibility and scalability of a new venture idea
    • Deeply curious: you have a strong desire to become an expert in a certain industry or business model. You love hunting down experts, listening to podcasts and reading anything you can get your hands on about the new topicPreference for startup operating or management consulting experience
$150,000 – $210,000 semi monthly
Compensation is market-competitive with an annual base salary of $150,000-$215,000 and will include upside in our funds.
