I. Job Summary
Directs the scouting, screening, analyzing, proof of concepts, and diligence of new and emerging technologies that impact WM, its business, or its processes. Directs the innovation activities in the Business Accelerator Lab and works across the field and corporate organization to develop and integrate such technologies and innovations into respective business units and market areas. Manages the identification, market analysis, strategy development, execution, and growth of new business adjacencies.
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
- Manage the Corporate Development and Innovation department which typically consists of employees with MBA and/or advanced technical engineering degrees. The department has five primary functions:
- Run an innovation lab and ideation process to identify ideas for improvement, prototype them in the lab, implement them as a beta in the field and seek to commercialize them.
- Research, develop strategies, stand up and create new adjacent business verticals with the goal of growing the verticals to a sufficient size and then integrate into WM’s core business.
- Simultaneously running multiple proof of concepts (POCs) to demonstrate the use of new technologies or processes and how they could be integrated or adapted into the company. Identifies KPIs and manages the POCs to success or fast failure. Work with other WM functions to deploy new technologies and processes into the business.
- Manage existing portfolio of Venturing Investments while scouting and managing investments in new technology or operating companies.
- Scouting globally for new investments/technologies that WM may wish to invest in or which may be disruptive to our business.
- Work with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, universities, and corporate partners to assess technical viability, economic viability, and strategic fit of emerging technologies using the Department’s defined vetting process.
- Manages the department's interface with the Senior Leadership Team and strategically aligns the department's goals and objectives with those of WM.
- Functional and broad understanding of WM’s business, logistics, and operating environments.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels of the organization with strong presentation skills necessary.
- Solid and demonstrated financial and business acumen skills.
III. Supervisory Responsibilities
The highest level of supervisor skills required in this job may be the management or indirect management of managerial employees. This includes:
- Direct supervision of 3-5 full-time employees, 1-3 part-time employees, and the indirect supervision of 5-10 full-time employees.
IV. Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
A. Education and Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Business Administration or Finance, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four (4) years of relevant experience.
- Experience: Fifteen (15) years of previous experience in a related role with financial, analytical, and business development responsibility (in addition to education requirements)
- Direct venturing and/or M&A experience including term sheets, due diligence, financial structures, and legal.
- Experience managing teams, both direct and indirect, with complex strategic goals and multiple stakeholders.
- Experience developing team goals, individual action plans, managing employee reviews, and recruiting and hiring team members.
- Experience developing and managing departmental budgets and capital requests.
