Job Description
The Development Capital team at Octopus Investments provides growth funding to ambitious UK SMEs. It has had an active last 18 months, completing 10 new investments. The team has recently raised fresh capital and is looking to expand its team as part of an exciting long-term growth plan. It is currently looking to hire an Investment Associate to supplement the current team of eight investment professionals.
Primary responsibilities are to be involved in origination, structuring and execution of growth capital investments of up to £10m into UK fast-growth businesses. Investments are considered across a range of sectors, although the fund has a particular focus on software and tech-enabled businesses. Examples of recent investments include B2B software provider Natterbox, recipe-kit company Simply Cook and online catering marketplace City Pantry which we exited to a FTSE 100 acquirer.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to join the boards of portfolios companies and support management teams with their growth ambitions.
Core Responsibilities
- Building and maintaining an origination network in the VC / growth capital market and establishing credibility across various subsectors of the technology space
- Working collaboratively to execute all aspects of a deal, including evaluation/filtering of deal opportunities, financial modelling, deal structuring and due diligence
- Helping to prepare investment papers and presenting them to Investment Committee
- Other ad-hoc analysis, portfolio monitoring, fundraising and supporting team initiatives
- Board observer involvement in portfolio companies
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in an investing role (VC, growth capital, venture debt or private equity) or strong transaction experience from banking, corporate finance or consulting
- Excellent financial analytical, modelling, and commercial skills for assessing and analysing investment opportunities
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the confidence to convey informed viewpoints to colleagues and external counterparties at all levels of seniority
- A proactive, driven self-starter, who thrives on challenges, can manage multiple workstreams concurrently and is able to collaborate as part of a team
- An enthusiasm for working with growth stage technology businesses; specific knowledge of tech/software investing and/or the growth capital ecosystems would be considered ideal but not essential
