Job Summary
Provides strategic research and business planning support for the MI2 Innovation Ventures team, including researching emerging technologies, collaboration or co-development opportunities and developing and articulating theories of change in written memos, white papers and presentations; evaluating business opportunities, including preparing materials for use by the Corporate Investment Committee for the MedStar Health Early-Stage Investment Fund and broadly for MedStar Health Executive Leadership; and, helping vet and structure internal and external entrepreneurs and companies to gain access to MedStar Health and create sustainable value propositions. Actively contributes to all aspects of MI2 Innovation Ventures operations, including identifying issues, forming hypotheses, designing and conducting analyses, synthesizing data and conclusions into recommendations and helping to implement change.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Training
    • Master’s degree in business, health administration, finance or related field, or Bachelor’s degree in business, health administration, finance or related field and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience
    • 2 years of investment (venture capital, private equity or banking) or consulting experience. Must have demonstrated exposure to innovation, entrepreneurship and/or technology, in the healthcare industry preferred. Direct experience with incubation, acceleration, and other startup programs is preferred. Familiarity with or interest in change management is a plus.
  • License/Certification/Registration
    • No special certification, registration or license required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong planning and management skills, and demonstrated ability to lead formal and informal teams. Must be a self-starter and show an ability to fully own individual research activities while proactively identifying and driving the execution of forward-looking plans across the team. Outstanding analytical skills, detail-oriented, proactive and self-motivated. Strong knowledge of database and analytics tools such as Microsoft Excel including advanced functions. Experience with financial modeling and investment valuation techniques. Ability to produce well-designed, professional PowerPoint presentations.

      Primary Duties and Responsibilities
      • Structures market research reports to help identify new investment trends and opportunities by collating information from multiple sources, including proprietary databases, media, academic reports, industry conferences, and individual research.
      • Serves as initial intake point for screening potential investment or collaboration leads, including fielding and initiating calls and/or meetings with prospects to evaluate opportunities and network for further leads.
      • Synthesizes and documents notes from multiple sources and enter key information and related insights into a database and/or strategy documents.
      • Maintains an open network with peers and other leaders in other organizations and funding sources.
      • Performs substantial Due Diligence on potential “target” companies and or technologies using the MedStar Early-Stage Investment Due Diligence Form along with other industry accepted due diligence structures, including synthesizing presentations and financial reports.
      • Leads the information gathering from the “target” company/technology and industry experts.
      • Performs current end-user research on existing references and customers of the” target” company/technology.
      • Creates competitive analysis reports on all direct and indirect competitors to the target company.
      • Researches and talks with technical/business consultants to evaluate the target company’s technology, including any protected Intellectual Property.
      • Conducts background reviews of the current management of the target company to ascertain and validate experience, success, and potential.
      • Performs structured valuation analysis via modeling to provide a projected value proposition for various deal structures.
      • Drafts internal investment memos to be shared with MedStar Executive Leadership and key external advisors and partners.
      • Serves as a conduit with MedStar Inventor Services on internally developed products or services that can contribute to the MI2 Innovation Ventures mission.
      • Leads and supports diverse aspects of innovation challenges, from helping identify fitting focus areas/challenge partners, to shaping/executing the competition, to operating related program logistics with participants, to accelerating/measuring outcomes.
      • Identifies, recommends and supports other opportunities for the new Innovation Ventures team to help MedStar transform its outcomes within priority focus areas.
      • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
      • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts
