VC Internship @ Arvelo in Austin, TX

Arvelo PLLC is an Austin, Texas based law firm focused on representing emerging growth companies. The firm works with founders on corporate and outside general counsel matters ranging from formation to exit.  The firm’s founder is in the process of creating an angel network to make seed investments in majority BIPOC owned startups.  This is where you come in.

Your Role

The firm is looking for a part-time (15-20 hours a week) summer intern in the role of Summer Venture Capital Analyst to help the firm’s founder review deals for an angel network investing in majority BIPOC owned startups.  This is a business internship, not a legal one.  You will work in the following areas:

Origination

  • Source deal flow through online conferences, trade press, desk research and related methods
  • Prioritize deal flow based on quality, fit, strategic value considerations and economic soundness
  • Maintain deal flow database

Investment

  • Support opportunity assessment and due diligence processes seed investments, with support from management (e.g. market, competitor and technology landscaping, IP landscaping, financial modeling, data room reviews, interviews with target management and personnel, reference calls, maintaining due diligence tracking)
  • Assist in drafting of deal memos and presentations

Market Research

  • Review third party materials for market intelligence to keep management informed on market trends
  • Prepare presentations of findings across geography, industry, and stage with trend analysis

Reporting & Communication

  • Support reporting of portfolio company performance to management via verbal and written communications
  • Ensure transaction documents are on file and maintained

Requirements

  • An interest in venture capital and startups 
  • Being hungry and ready to hustle.  You understand that grit > talent
  • The ability to bring potential answers when highlighting issues
  • Your own laptop
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office, especially Excel & PowerPoint
  • Low ego and willingness to learn and take and give feedback 
  • A keen eye for detail and polished work product  
  • A current undergraduate student with preferences for rising juniors and seniors
  • The ability to take complex data and distill it to its key insights and be able communicate your findings succinctly

Nice to Haves

  • Based in Austin, TX but remote is ok
  • Experience with at least some of the responsibilities mentioned above including experience vetting startups
  • An understanding of seed stage startup financing
  • Experience researching industries and providing market analysis

The internship will last 10-12 weeks and will be paid.  Expected compensation is $15/hr.
