VC Director @ CMFG Ventures in San Francisco, CA

Assist in all aspects of the venture capital investment program of CMFG Ventures, working primarily for the CMFG Ventures Discovery Fund, a new fund that will focus on investment opportunities in early-stage fintech and insuretech companies founded or led by individuals of color, women and other traditionally underrepresented groups. Identify and source compelling investment opportunities to maintain a strong pipeline of quality deal opportunities, especially for seed and pre-seed investment opportunities for the Discovery Fund. Provide expertise and advice on structuring opportunities with potential portfolio companies and other strategic partners. Actively participate in the management of the Discovery Fund’s portfolio of investments, including pro-actively engaging with the senior management of portfolio companies to help execute strategies, solve business challenges, drive growth and maximize value.

Sourcing And Advisory Responsibilities

Detailed Job Responsibilities

  • Identify and source potential deal opportunities from internal and external networks, PE/VC funds and other investor groups to drive deal flow
  • Attend conferences / workshops to network, gather competitive intelligence, and identify market trends, partnership opportunities, and compelling investment ideas
  • Facilitate and participate on calls, demos and other meetings with investment prospects
  • Provide insights and recommendations on investment opportunities to the other members of CMFG Ventures, the Ventures Investment Committee and other key stakeholders
  • Establish, develop and manage relationships with target companies, VC firms, accelerators, incubators and other stakeholders through all phases of the investment process

Assessment Phase Responsibilities

  • Assess business and revenue/profit models of target companies, market dynamics, deal economics and financial potential of investments
  • Work alongside internal business executives and external advisors to assess investment and commercial transaction opportunities
  • Develop investment theses and prepare investment presentations and memoranda

Transaction Phase Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of due diligence covering business, financial, tax, legal, operating, etc.
  • Develop final business case with a specific emphasis on transaction and financial related matters
  • Develop and negotiate deal terms with target companies, VC sponsor or other relevant stakeholders
  • Manage external advisors, where applicable, to ensure transaction objectives and timelines are met

Performance Management Responsibilities

  • Help identify and develop opportunities for portfolio companies to maximize the economic value of their businesses
  • Assist in any subsequent capital raise activities for portfolio companies
  • Serve as liaison between portfolio companies and CUNA Mutual Group and other interested stakeholders

Hiring Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of professional finance work experience with at least 2-4 years of direct experience in venture capital or other early-stage company experience
  • Increasing levels of responsibility throughout career with experience managing transactions or investments from inception to close
  • Direct experience assisting with deal and contract negotiations, as well as resolving complex business issues and structuring complex contracts
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Strong communicator with proven networking and negotiation skills and the ability to clearly articulate goals and objectives

Hiring Preferences

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree or MBA preferred
  • Venture capital experience in the fintech and/or insuretech sectors preferred
  • Existing network of relationships with angel networks, venture capital funds and other early-stage investors preferred
  • Exceptional financial and analytical skills with command of valuation methodologies
  • Command of transaction structuring
  • Comfortable networking both internally and externally with key stakeholders
  • Ability to make data driven decisions under strict time deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong team leadership and motivation skills
