Vice President of Corporate Strategy @ Western Digital in San Jose, CA

The VP of Corporate Strategy will report directly to the President, WD Capital, Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Western Digital. This position is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of long-range strategic plans and objectives for the company in partnership with the executive team. Responsible for overseeing the analysis of trends and developments in technology, markets, and for formulating strategic courses of action to maximize the company’s leverage and capabilities within its markets. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Overseeing the development and execution of long-range strategic plans and objectives for the overall organization (major region, region, country, group, division, subsidiary, or other sub-part).
  • Responsible for overseeing the analysis of trends and developments in technology and for formulating strategic courses of action to maximize the company’s leverage within its markets.
  • Works with the senior executive team and manages a small staff which focuses on Strategic Planning, Market Intelligence and Strategic projects.
  • Partners with Corporate Development to oversee a portion of the overall business development function at the corporate level, such as strategic partnerships/alliances or a new service or product line.
  • Helps Corporate Development with the identification and pursuit of some or all of the following: strategic business opportunities, mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, alliances, joint ventures, and licensing agreements or evaluation/management of investments in company ventures or entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Helps develop and implement strategic plans and objectives for the organization in alignment with corporate strategy; oversees direction and approves tactical administrative or operational policies and resource allocation decisions to ensure achievement of objectives.
  • Responsible for preparation of strategic planning presentation materials for quarterly meetings of the Board of Directors.Responsible for maintaining a regularly occurring series of meetings to discuss various strategic topics.
  • Responsible for the corporate market intelligence/TAM analysis function.Develops strategic plans to ensure successful implementation of action plans and objectives where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the company, competitive environment, technology and economic or social implications of organization activities.
  • Participates in development of corporate methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.
  • Regularly interacts with executives and/or ecosystem partners. Interactions frequently involve highly visible activities such as influencing other executives and/or academics, lobbying regulators or policy makers and representing the organization on matters of great significance to the organization.
  • Manages a team of directors and/or high-level individual contributors.Role partners with China Strategy Team, FP&A, Marketing and Heads of Business Units and Functions.Candidate must possess a Global Perspective of the business and work collaboratively with all levels in the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Education, Certifications, and/or Licenses and Experience:
    • Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following: Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or computer science is preferred.
    • MBA or equivalent work experience that demonstrates breadth of business acumen (e.g., strategy, technical marketing, business development, operations, corporate finance, etc.).
    • 8-10 years of experience in professional services (consulting, investment banking, or private equity).
    • 8-10 years in the high technology industry with full-time focus on strategic planning.
  • Specific Knowledge:
    • Deep and expert knowledge of the information technology industry, including the storage, memory and networking markets.
    • Working knowledge of mergers and acquisitions (diligence, deal structuring and integration).
    • Knowledge of financial modeling, valuation methodologies and financial statement analysis.
  • Computer, Software, Tools, Equipment, and Machinery Skills:
    • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, email, internet, intranet, phone, copier and printer.
  • Interpersonal:
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others who may have ongoing competing priorities and viewpoints, including company employees in other countries.
    • Possess a high level of personal enthusiasm and self-motivation.
    • Effectively communicate and defend decisions to others, including C-suite/senior level executives.
    • Promote positive relations within the storage ecosystem while protecting the best interests of the company.
