Citi Ventures is Citi’s corporate innovation engine. The Citi Ventures Investing (CVI) team focuses on identifying and investing in entrepreneurs who will help define the future of financial services. These might include external startups, in which CVI typically invests together with traditional VCs, and spinoffs of Citi existing internal or incubated businesses, in which CVI typically brings strategics as co-investors in consortium deals. CVI also seeks to add value to distinctive external startups and particularly of its portfolio companies by fostering interactions with Citi and/or Citi clients to identify potential matches; this achieves the dual objectives of helping our portfolio companies scale and enhance their product roadmaps while helping Citi increase its ability to innovate.
The CVI team is seeking a highly motivated individual to (a) engage Citi colleagues, Clients and the external ecosystem, (b) execute spinoffs/consortium fintech investments in close partnership with Citi’s businesses and functions, and (c) source and execute investments in distinctive fintech and enterprise software startups and introduced them to Citi colleagues and clients. The role is based in New York.
Position Scope & Responsibilities:
- Engaging with Citi colleagues, Clients and the external ecosystem
- Interact with Citi colleagues and Clients to understand strategic priorities and roadmaps
- Prepare presentations on relevant industry trends and organize domain sessions and startup workshops for Citi colleagues and Clients
- Make startup introductions for commercialization opportunities to Citi colleagues and Clients
- Conduct market research on emerging industry trends, deal flow, and specific startups
- Organize and attend venture capital and startup ecosystem events
- Executing/monitoring fintech spinoffs/consortium investments
- In close partnership with businesses and functions to identify and assess promising spinoff/ consortium opportunities and agree on deal strategy for led deals
- For led deals: drive preparation of investment materials/data rooms, approach potential co-investors, negotiate terms, coordinate with Corp M&A for spinoff execution, and execute deals
- For co-investment deals: review investment materials/data rooms, develop and share a point of view with business executives, conduct due diligence, negotiate terms with counterparties, and execute investments
- Own the governance process and post-deal portfolio monitoring together with business
- Sourcing/executing investments in distinctive fintech/enterprise software startups
- Source, screen and track dealflow proactively, via research-based targeted outreach, and reactively, by developing relationships with entrepreneurs and investors
- Conduct due diligence on potential investments in collaboration with deal leads
- Create investment decks, models, and deal memos
- Help portfolio companies align product roadmaps with key industry challenges and navigate Citi with relevant introductions
- Own the governance and post-deal portfolio monitoring process
Qualifications
- Must have bachelor’s degree from a top college or university, preferably in Economics or other analytical disciplines
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in either venture investing (at a venture capital or growth equity firm or in corporate venture investing) or in technology-focused or FIG-focused investment banking
- Drive and ability to collaborate in teams and work independently
- Ability to articulate and debate opinions on potential investments
- Ability to navigate a large financial services organization and to engage executives from Citi and Citi Clients
