VC Director @ Verizon Ventures in Palo Alto, CA

Verizon Ventures seeks an Investment Director reporting to an Executive Director in the Ventures organization.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Investment Thesis Development:
    • Working with various internal teams at Verizon, including business units, product management, product development, corporate and product strategy and network to identify and prioritize topics to develop and inform potential investment theses
    • Identify emerging technology trends to develop and inform potential investment theses
    • Undertake periodic top down and bottoms up fundamental research highlighting thematic trends that are potentially strategic to Verizon


  • Build pipeline of potential investment prospects
    • Source, engage, review and qualify new technology startups in investment thesis areas
    • Screen potential deal opportunities based on fit with investment thesis and other Ventures deal criteria
    • Working with the Executive Director, qualify and prioritize deal opportunities in the pipeline


  • Deal Execution:
    • Perform technical, operational and financial due diligence on qualified deal candidates
    • Evaluate all key term sheet terms, cap tables and option allocation dynamics
    • Build forecasts and DCF valuation models with appropriate operational and financial benchmarking analysis
    • Socialize deal theses and deal rationale with internal stakeholders and deal sponsors where appropriate
    • Prepare deal summary and recommendations for investment committee consideration
    • Pitch deal proposal to Executive Director, Ventures peers and Investment Committee
    • Coordinate with Verizon legal and finance stakeholders to review and execute agreements and process for funding investments


  • Portfolio Management:
    • Jointly explore new innovation creation opportunities through collaboration with internal stakeholders and external entrepreneurs
    • Track and report key metrics associated with all aspects of the investment pipeline, portfolio partnership efforts, and innovation exploration.


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five or more years of relevant work experience, including:
  • Experience in structuring technology investments, financial analysis/modeling, due diligence process for financial investments
  • Experience in corporate or product strategy

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • CFA and or MBA in Finance
  • Interest in new emerging technologies
  • Track record of big picture strategic thinking and strategy formulation
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and identify new thematic investment trends
  • Passion for venture investing and be a self-starter
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to motivate team members, peers and superiors to action
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills and the ability to communicate ideas effectively, at all levels of management, throughout the organization.
  • Attention to detail and a collaborative approach to sharing insights is required
  • Proven execution skills – the successful candidate must be capable of executing against the roadmap strategy alongside existing team
