Asahi Kasei Group (AK)(LinkedIn, Crunchbase) , a diversified company that has an expanding global healthcare business, has created an initiative to accelerate the development of its businesses through additional, focused equity investing. This newly created position will serve as a key contributor to implement this initiative. This position will lead strategic equity investing to strengthen existing and new businesses of Asahi Kasei Pharma (AKP). This position will report to a Senior Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei Pharma, based in Tokyo, Japan. This position will also work closely with the Business Development efforts of the other parts of Asahi Kasei Healthcare, as well as with the Corporate R&D’s Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) group.
Essential Functions:
Establish Business Driven Equity investments for AKP
- In conjunction with AKP senior management, define and implement a robust process for business driven equity investing by AKPDir
- Define activities, roles, milestones, deliverables, decisions points and decision criteria
- Establish the required investment approval process for each stage of the transaction
Implement Transactions and Investment
- Lead and coordinate all efforts required to execute transactions and investments
- Understand the target areas and broad financial parameters that are acceptable for AKP VC activity
- Source and manage pipeline of opportunities; work to identify potential targets that fit AKP’s projected portfolio
- Develop relationships in therapeutic areas of interest; maintain regular contact with potential portfolio companies, bankers, venture firms, outside venture funds, industry insiders, key clinicians and academic thought leaders
- Maintain a pipeline of potential transactions including contact information, rationale and communication history
- Maintain regular communication with AKP senior management and other internal stakeholders
Manage Specific Projects
- Provide necessary action plans with market analysis in the target area
- Understand all economic drivers in detail and provide necessary financial modeling
- Negotiate potential transactions
- Structure and lead effective and efficient due diligence process. Collaborate with key contacts in AKP, as well as other parts of AK Healthcare
- Prepare and deliver presentations and associated materials required for approval of potential investments
- Attend portfolio company board meetings as a member or observer as appropriate. Help drive portfolio companies to success
- Lead activities for AKP acquisition of portfolio company and coordinate initial post-merger integration and handoff to team/business owner
Other Duties
- Support M&A team on an ad hoc basis in finding, addressing, evaluating and approaching potential targets
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skill Requirements:
- A strong understanding of drug discovery and development, as well as FDA regulations is preferred. Support for scientific matters will come from others in AKP
- Strong professional network in pharma, Biopharma and biotech venture industry
- At least 5 to 10 years’ experience of corporate venture, venture capital, corporate business development or investment banking in the healthcare field
- Capacity to work in a global environment; ability to cross divides and interpret multiple cultures
- In-depth knowledge and experience of due diligence and valuation techniques
- Excellent command of MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required, MBA or other advanced Science or Medical degree preferred.
