VC Analyst @ VTC Innovation Fund in Roanoke, VA

The Role: Full Time Venture Analyst or Associate (depending on experience) position based in Roanoke or Blacksburg, VA.

The VTC Innovation Fund is recruiting an Analyst or Associate (depending on experience). The Fund focuses on early-stage regional opportunities within Virginia, and specifically targets high technology companies in the life sciences, biotechnology, and information technology sectors.

Position Description:

The Analyst / Associate will be an integral part of the investment team and will report directly to the Principal & Fund Manager. The Analyst / Associate will support / lead a wide range of activities including:

  • Conducting investment due-diligence in the form of financial modeling, interviews with users, market analysis, and competitive benchmarking
  • Identifying new investment opportunities sourced from traditional channels (e.g., conferences, demo-days) and informal networks (e.g., Angels, VCs, Entrepreneurs, Professors)
  • Over time, assisting portfolio companies with special projects (e.g. business development, customer introductions, employee recruitment, raising follow-on capital)
  • Carrying out primary research on industry trends to uncover novel insights
  • Supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem on behalf of the fund (e.g., mentoring start-ups, attending technology meet-ups, establish social media presence)
  • Assisting with fund administration and reporting (e.g., analysis of portfolio performance, preparation of presentation materials) ahead of Investment Committee meetings
  • Preparing and presenting investment memoranda

Position Requirements:

  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to apply unconventional thinking to conduct research and due diligence in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Passion for entrepreneurial ecosystem development
  • High attention to detail

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with demonstrated analytical capability
  • Experience with launching and/or interacting with early-stage startups preferred
  • Solid understanding of technology markets and trends

In addition to the requirements, education, and experience listed above, ideal candidates will possess:

  • Understanding of biology, medicinal chemistry, engineering, computer science, or other scientific/technical field
  • Pre-existing networks / high connectivity to Roanoke/Blacksburg entrepreneurial ecosystem
  • Strong professional network in the broader investment community a plus
