VC Analyst @ Volta Energy Technologies in Warrenville, IL

Volta Energy Technologies, LLC (“Volta”) is looking for a technical analyst to join its growing team in its office located in west-suburban Chicago. Volta is a venture capital investment firm focused on seeking out investment opportunities in companies with cutting-edge, disruptive energy storage and related technologies. Our immediate need is for a technical analyst to work alongside business counterparts to perform technical diligence on prospective portfolio companies.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial review of investment prospects and gather foundational technical information through interviews and discussions with personnel from the candidate companies
  • Complete interviews with existing or potential customers of the candidate companies
  • Complete interviews with existing or potential companies that are jointly developing technologies with the candidate companies
  • Perform technical analysis for venture capital stage investments, including verification and analysis of the prospective portfolio company’s underlying technology, performance data, and other information gathered during diligence
  • Use market data and data collected from the candidate companies, support Volta’s financial personnel that create financial models that can be used to assess financial risk, support candidate company valuations, and project potential financial returns under various scenarios based on assumptions related to key variables that will impact financial performance
  • Create investment presentations and memoranda that thoroughly describe investment rationale, competition analyses, key risks and potential mitigations
  • Post-investment, monitor and assess technical information provided by portfolio companies and add value by helping the companies as they mature and grow

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree highly desirable
  • Strong technical analysis capabilities, including a thorough understanding of one or more energy and/or energy storage technology categories (e.g., power systems, power electronics, power conversion, battery chemistry, materials science, fabrication and manufacturing processes, battery management systems, techno-economic modeling, etc.)
  • Highly quantitative; data-driven approach to decision making, methodical and detail-oriented
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and able to interface at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to translate highly technical information into presentations and memoranda suitable for a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to execute and manage multiple projects or tasks in a time critical, transaction-oriented environment
  • Self-starter that requires limited oversight, equally comfortable working individually and on teams, including with scientists and engineers
  • Business travel expected to be around 25%; preference will be given to candidates willing to relocate to the Chicagoland area
