Corporate Development and Venture Intern @ Varian Medical Systems in Palo Alto, CA

As an integral member of the deal team with Varian’s BD&S team, (linkedin, crunchbase) you will assist the team leaders on healthcare industry research, underwriting, and execution of corporate ventures. This position will play a key role in screening, evaluating, and conducting diligence on M&A and investment opportunities.

Participate in all aspects of an acquisition or investment transaction underwriting including: analysis, modeling, due diligence, structuring, documentation and legal consideration

  • Analyze market segments for opportunities and report to senior staff on recommendations to pursue
  • Attend industry trade shows and research meetings
  • Prepare presentations for business development and management staff and participate in presentation of content with senior Varian executives as needed
  • Monitor financial and operational conditions and industry dynamics
  • Perform financial analyses and modeling as needed. Support BD team in interactions and discussions with top company executives and senior management as needed
  • Develop material for internal projects and presentations
  • Experience in the healthcare industry is strongly desired. Preferably past-experience in healthcare investment banking, management consulting, venture capital investing, private equity investing, product marketing, or R&D of an operating company
  • Demonstrated ability to create complex financial models with understanding of core finance and accounting principles
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct market analysis and competitive landscaping with the ability to translate the results into effective communication tools (presentations, pitches, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and multitask while maintaining attention to detail
  • Strong project management and communication skills desired
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, MD, or related medical or technical degree
  • MBA or other graduate degree is highly desirable. Specifically, an MD or advanced degree in natural sciences is preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an operating role at a medical device, diagnostics or Healthcare IT company, business development M&A, management consulting, venture capital / private equity or investment banking / investment research
